This week, listen on air, online or download the “Trilogy for Night and Radio: Radiotelegraph/Night Fall/Relay“, a three-part sound work by Anna Friz and Konrad Korabiewski. The work uses the intimacy of radio to reflect upon conditions of remoteness, fellowship across distance, and the fragility of human signals.

“Trilogy for Night and Radio” is the prologue to the four part “The Remote Series”, created by internationally acclaimed artists working with sound. Each is asked to consider an aspect of the idea of ‘remoteness’, or the experience of distance.

Subsequent episodes in “The Remote Series” will air in Australia on Radio National in late winter early spring 2015:

the remote series#1 by Tumi Magnússon (Iceland)
the remote series#2 by Fernando Godoy M (Chile)
the  remote series#3 by Christina Kubisch (Germany)
the  remote series#4  by Jana Winderen (Norway)

“Trilogy for Night and Radio: Radiotelegraph/Night Fall/Relay” is produced by Skálar FM for the Creative Audio Unit with additional support from the Danish Arts Foundation, the Danish Composer’s Society, radioCONA, Kultural Center Tobačna 001, and Skaftfell Center for Visual Arts.

As part of the Tsonami Sound Art Festival 2014 in the bohemian city of Valparaíso, Chile, a festival with a wonderful progressive independent spirit, the audio-visual collaboration NS-12, made together with Icelandic film artist Kristján Loðmfjörð (recently nominated for the Marl Video Art Award 2014 in Germany), will have its South American premiere Tuesday 2nd of December in the gallery Casa E. The piece will be installed in 5.1 version and runs during the festival until the 7th of December. A short artist statement will open the exhibition as introduction to the piece.
Canadian sound | radio | transmission artist Anna Friz and I will have a concert | performance under the title Magnetic Meridian, an improvised concert reflecting upon the conditions of geographic and communicative remoteness, and the fragility of unstable human signals. The concert will take place in Teatro PCdV, Thursday 4th of December 19:30 hours local time.
TsonamiSoundArtFestival
Same day, same place, only a few hours before (17:00 hours) Anna Friz and I will also have a lecture under the title The Feeling of North, introducing our current focus as curators and practicing members of Skálar | Sound Art | Experimental Music. Skálar is particularly interested to generate and support artistic practices which highlight unstable systems, open spaces to new interpretations and use, and which engage in perceptual feedback and affect between site and subject. We will discuss Skálar’s activities in remote landscapes in Iceland, as well as examples of our own work such as the audio-visual collaboration NS-12 and the radio art intervention Radiotelegraph.

Among other artists performing and participating in the VIII Festival de Arte Sonoro Tsonami 2014 are Carsten Stabenow (de), Yann Leguay (be), Francisco López (es), Christian Galarreta & Janneke van der Putten (pe/nl). More info http://tsonami.cl

mikromusik. Festival für experimentelle Musik und Sound Art, with several installations and concerts by many present and former Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD guests; Zeena Parkins (us), Osvaldo Budon (uy), Emeka Ogboh (ng) and Konrad Korabiewski (pl/dk/is/de) among others.

mikromusik

The new audio visual installation Storkwinkel on Saturday August 16, 6 pm, during the final event of 47. Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (Darmstadt Summer Course 2014).

Storkwinkel is a multi-channel audio and visual composition departing from fine-focused observations and phonography of flat in an Berlin altbau. Its a investigation into the micro-acoustics of interior space: white rooms, tall ceilings, high windows; vestibules, unusual corners and sharp angled-edges. The work departs from precise amplifications of space and surface, taking the altitude and angle of each room to discover its tones, harmonics, and the audible evidence of daily activity within and without.

The exhibition presents a group of local and international visual artists who are in an active contact with Seyðisfjörður, a village with 670 inhabitants in East Iceland. Some of the artists live permanently in the town, others own houses or reside regularly in the fjord. On exhibition are new or recent works, which are made locally or refer to the place, in the Skaftfell gallery as well as various sites and venues throughout the town. Komplex is a forthcoming vinyl album by Roger Döring (Dictaphone/Moser/Meyer/Döring) and the award-winning multimedia artist Konrad Korabiewski, released by the German sound art label Gruenrekorder in collaboration with Skálar | Sound Art | Experimental Music , East Iceland.

Flucht | Komplex from Konrad Korabiewski on Vimeo.

The project was created over two years in Seyðisfjörður, Iceland and in Berlin, Germany, and is an evolving conversation between Döring’s improvisation on acoustic instruments such as clarinet and saxophones, and Korabiewski’s electronic live treatment and composition with Döring’sounds. A third compositional element is contributed by the particular ambiences of the spaces in which the recordings took place, as Korabiewski and Döring came together to record at sites with personal and acoustic resonance, from Döring’s apartment in Berlin to an abandoned herring factory by the sea in east Iceland.

In concert, Döring and Korabiewski deepen their musical dialogue, using live electronics to treat and highlight the physicality of acoustic improvisations on clarinet, saxophone, and accordion. Komplex, release concert, Ausland, 11.06.2014. 20.30 uhr.

Two performance works for multi-channel radio, featuring two vintage Telefunken Bajazzo radio/cassette decks, multiple micro-FM transmitters, and a chorus of supporting radio receivers. The artists employ lo-fi instruments, spectral monitoring, and intricate feedback systems to craft an expressive and intimate world from the sensuality of signal and noise.Anna Friz | Konrad Korabiewski | concert | artists talk | LinzMore info: http://nomadenetappe.net/

DAADflyer

Running into a old friend in Berlin results in new collaboration with German artist Dirk Dresselhaus aka Schneider ™, who back in 2008 did a remix of Mummy´s Birthday Greetings from the album Stateless (BSBTA/d’Oorhinge l’Orange, 2008).
Dirk Dresselhaus being author of many multidimensional music projects, has released numbers of influential records as Moist (City Slang, 1998) and Construction Sounds (Bureau B, 2012).
Together in the studio ZONE, Berlin we will be sound engineering and mixing the join forthcoming vinyl album by Roger Döring |  Konrad Korabiewski titled Komplex to be released by the German label Gruenrekorder. Release concert in Ausland, Berlin- Prenzlauer Berg, June 11th 2014.

I am pleased to announce the premiere of a new audio-visual work NS-12 at the Institute for Music and Acoustics at Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe 15th of May 2014, 8 pm. NS-12 is a collaboration with the Icelandic filmmaker Kristján Loðmfjörð.

Through sound and image, NS-12 portrays the fishing trawler Gullver, based in Seyðisfjörður East Iceland.
The trawler is designed to withstand the heaviness and roughness of waves and weather as a self-contained world on its own, and functions as both an individual and collective space within the constant sensation of motion on the sea. For the people working on board, the ship might be seen as a tool, but it can be artistically perceived as a living organism, as a musical instrument triggering the senses, and as a visual landscape of textures and colors. The audio-visual work captures everyday situations and practices by applying an expressionistic approach for an experimental outcome.
It communicates the human spirit, essential for the on-board experience with the heavy rolling of the ship and the ceaseless sound of the engine. The piece is for 8 audio channels and 1 HD projector, 52 min.

NS-12 printstill 1The original soundscape for the work is realized as a contemporary composition where all the material is sourced from reality, whereas the imagery is mainly based of still-life recordings where visual perception shines above realism. Together the two mediums explore the complete body of the ship to capture the essence of the steel, a visually intriguing labyrinth where each room has it’s own way of carrying the sound from the engine.

An Intricate Game of Position is the title of the workshop with the Canadian radio artist Anna Friz at Astrid Noack Ateiler in Copenhagen 9th of February. It includes an introduction to key paradigms such spatiality and resonance, active listening, transception, and transmission ecology. Includes a listening session and demonstration of basic transmission principles using micro-radio. Participants will also undertake guided activities such as soundwalking, improvisation exercises, and work together to create ‘instant’ performative radio pieces.

A live radio art performance titled Night Fall with Anna Friz (CA) expands from the sonic palate of the beacon in an improvised live show for unlicensed transmission, and invites the audience to  contemplate the acoustic and electro-magnetic landscape of Seyðisfjörður at dusk. Tune in to 107.1FM from 17:41 for approximately one hour (or until dark) local time. Broadcasting from the residency space on the top floor of Skaftfell – Center for Visual Art, East Iceland, so listeners are also welcome to drop in to the open radio studio.

The award wining piece ‘Skeyti’  is now exclusively available on the Danish 2xCD compilation ‘Lyd Kunst Arkivet’  (the Sound Art Archive), which was released by an organization called Monoblaster as part of the LAK Nordic Sound Art Festival which I had the privilege to open previously this year in Copenhagen. The Berliner Künstlerprogramm – Artists-in-Berlin Program – is one of the most renowned international programs offering grants to artists in the fields of visual arts, literature, music and film. Since 1963, some 20 grants are awarded to international artists for an approximately one year stay in Berlin. The names of over 1.000 former guests impressively underscore the quality of the program. In its almost 50 years of existence, it has made a significant contribution to the international representation of contemporary arts in Berlin.
In the 1960s and 1970s, György Kurtág, Krzystof Penderecki, György Ligeti, Isang Yun, John Cage, Morton Feldman were among the elected artists. The selection was in the 1980s expanded to represent the latest trends in electro-acoustic music and performance art in which artists such as Luigi Nono, Bill Fontana, Fast Forward, Shelley Hirsch, Fatima Miranda, David Moss, Gordon Monahan, Sainkho Namtchylak, Carles Santos, Bjørn Nørgaard, Simon Steen-Andersen.

DAADgalerie

From the very beginning, the Berliner Künstlerprogramm has defined itself as a forum of artistic dialogue which extends beyond cultural, geographical and, certainly, beyond political borders. This forum is effective and vigorous not only through the work and presence of the artists living in the city, but also through the approximately 100 events a year which the Berliner Künstlerprogramm hosts in conjunction with its guests in Berlin and other cities, and not least, by the international juries of experts in the four sections who decide upon the invitations to be issued. In this way, standpoints of the international artistic avant-garde are mediated, not only in Berlin, stimulating both aesthetic and political discourse. In Berlin, the center of activities is the daadgalerie on Zimmerstraße. An interview about my work in connection to the des DAAD award  is published online by SNYK Contemporary Music and Sound Art in Denmark

From beginning of April I’ll be attending an intense tour with one of the current projects ‘the art book orchestra’ accompanied by lectures at Art Academies and Universities across Europe.

The performance The art book orchestra is an extraordinary audio visual concert form which has come to the large international attention both in the media, exhibitions, and in art & technology research. The concept is 10 different art books on stage, which live acts as the only musical instruments (live electronics). For performance & lectures dates please keep yourself updated in the section of activities on this webpage.

As part of the international Skálar Sound Art FestivalThomas Köner (de) will have exibition opening of the video installation  ‘La Barca’.

Exibition opening at Gallery and art studio HOF, Wendsday 4th of October 2012 at 12 pm and is running until 31st of October. Árstígur 6 | IS-710-Seyðisfjörður. Welcome!

Thomas Köner is a pioneering multimedia artist whose main interest lies in combining visual and auditory experiences. Over his long, much celebrated career, he has worked between installation works, sound art, minimal soundscapes, and (as one half of Porter Ricks) fantastically repetitive dub techno. He attended the music college in Dortmund and studied electronic music at the CEM-Studio in Arnhem. Until 1994 he worked for the film industry as editor and sound engineer. He extended his concept of time and sound colour to images, resulting in video installations, photography and net art.

His point of departure was composition of sound in which aspects of a performance and visual language were gradually integrated.

Gavin Morrison about Tumi Magnússon´s engagement with image, perception, meaning and a complexity to the history of painting:
There is a materialistic conviction in Magnússon´s work. His practice arose from a conceptual art and fluxus basis but from the 1980s predominately concerned painting. And although he no longer uses that medium the work is still conversant with thatidiom.  Common across the work has been the pursuit of a form of abstraction of qualities;  colour, form, and size. The word abstraction maybe misleading if thought of as pertaining to colour field painting or abstract expressionism but Magnússon´s relationship to the term is more literal. he abstracts from reality, the work remains figurative, it depicts actual objects or qualities of objects but in ways in which isolates and intensifies.
